Adric woke to the smell of forest and the sight of his nemesis, demure in
black lace. He glimpsed himself, heroic in cold marble, a tomb, and a quiet
green glade. "It's the Day of the Dead, Adric," she said. "Sit with me."

A white cloth was spread. There was something red in the cup, tasting of
ashes, regret, and attar of roses. The chicken was pungent with an herb he
could not name.

"Rosemary," she said. "The herb of remembrance."

The meal was memory. She pulled him close. "We dance."

When it finally came, the knife felt like tenderness.

I couldn't make a challenge and then sit out on the sidelines. :)
